'Have you ever had a moment when you simply have to pause, to admire the view, revel in the atmosphere, feel glad that you are alive? Living in Devon it’s easy to be inspired by the countryside, coast and sky'.
'Pressing life’s pause button is what painting is for me. It is born from those moments. Whether I'm trying to capture the essence of the landscape, an emotion in a portrait, or a narrative in a still life; it’s about observing and connecting with a fleeting moment, and translating that feeling into oil paint'.
Julie Dunster's landscape paintings are either created ‘en plein air’ on location, in all weathers, driven by the urgency of catching the light and the impression of a place, or created in her Mid Devon studio, where these impressions are refined into slower paintings, created by layers, glazes and scumbles; a distillation of time, memory and emotion.
Julie has exhibited and sold seascapes, landscapes and portraits at the Mall Galleries in London, exhibiting with prestigious societies such as the Royal Society of Marine Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Society of Women Artists, and the South West Academy of Fine Arts.
She was the winner of the Broadway Arts Festival Paint Off, and Artist In Residence at both the Altitude Festival and Salcombe Merlin Regatta 2019, and highly commended at Windsor & Eton Plein Air Competition in 2018.
